A food delivery rider in China has sparked widespread outrage after surveillance footage allegedly captured him relieving himself inside a residential elevator while carrying a customer’s order.
The incident reportedly took place on June 1 at the Poly Times residential complex in Changde, Hunan Province. CCTV footage showed the rider entering the lift with a food delivery before unexpectedly squatting down and defecating inside the elevator during the ride.
According to reports, the entire incident lasted around 40 seconds. After the elevator reached the 33rd floor, the rider reportedly pulled up his trousers and calmly exited the lift to continue his delivery as if nothing had happened.
The incident only came to light after a resident reviewed the building’s surveillance footage. Once the video began circulating online, it quickly triggered outrage among residents and social media users.
The property’s management company later confirmed the incident and said police had been notified. Cleaning staff were also deployed to thoroughly disinfect the elevator following the discovery.
Management has since pledged to strengthen monitoring of delivery personnel entering the residential complex and increase security patrols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Local authorities said the case remains under investigation.
The footage has generated heated debate online, with many expressing disgust over the rider’s actions and questioning hygiene standards surrounding food deliveries.
Others, however, sympathised with the rider, suggesting he may have been suffering from a sudden stomach problem and unable to find a toilet in time. Some also pointed to the pressures faced by delivery workers, arguing that tight delivery schedules and limited access to restroom facilities may have contributed to the incident.
