The death of a young medical officer under Indonesia’s Specialist Doctor Education Programme (PPDS) has drawn public attention after his body was discovered near a hospital area in Riau on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as Alex Cristo Loris, 31, was a resident doctor specialising in anaesthesiology and was undergoing specialist training at Hospital Tengku Rafian, Desa Kampung Dalam.
Siak Criminal Investigation Unit chief AKP Raja Kosmos said the victim had been reported missing since Monday afternoon after leaving the hospital premises.
Based on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, Alex was seen walking out of the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) area before heading towards an unknown location.
“Further investigations are currently being carried out by the authorities,” he said.
The incident has also raised concerns within Indonesia’s medical community, with the Indonesian Doctors Association (PB IDI) expressing concern over the wellbeing of healthcare workers, particularly amid reports involving bullying within specialist training programmes.
PB IDI secretary-general Telogo Wismo Agung Durmanto said the organisation was coordinating with the local IDI branch to look into the matter and would usually be involved in investigations involving similar cases.
Earlier, another death involving a resident doctor specialising in anaesthesiology was reported at Hospital Kandou, Manado. The doctor, identified as AR, was suspected to have suffered extreme pressure allegedly linked to bullying during specialist training.
Authorities are continuing investigations into Alex’s death, while the medical fraternity awaits further findings.
