A suspected drug trafficker was killed after a pickup truck loaded with approximately five million methamphetamine pills overturned while fleeing from police in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The dramatic incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday after authorities received intelligence about a planned narcotics smuggling operation passing through Kalayanawatana district.
According to local officials, anti-narcotics personnel and police officers were deployed to patrol the area following information from an informant regarding suspected drug trafficking activities.
At around midnight, officers spotted a suspicious Isuzu pickup truck bearing Chiang Mai registration plates and signalled for the driver to stop for inspection.
However, the driver ignored police instructions and sped through the checkpoint, triggering a pursuit.
The vehicle fled towards Ban Mae Daed Noi in Mae Daed subdistrict, but the driver reportedly lost control after entering an unfamiliar route.
The pickup truck overturned during the escape attempt, leaving the driver dead at the scene.
A subsequent search of the wrecked vehicle uncovered around 25 large sacks concealed in the truck, containing an estimated five million methamphetamine pills.
The massive drug haul is believed to be one of the largest seizures recorded in the area this year.
Following the discovery, police officers from Kalayanawatana Police Station, district officials, volunteer defence personnel and local community leaders secured the crash site while awaiting forensic investigators.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the origin and intended destination of the narcotics, as well as whether additional suspects were involved in the trafficking operation.
The seized drugs have been taken into custody as evidence while investigators work to dismantle the wider network believed to be linked to the smuggling attempt.
The case highlights the ongoing challenge faced by authorities in northern Thailand, a region frequently used as a transit route by organised drug syndicates operating across borders.
