Three Indonesian Volcanoes Erupt In One Day As Anak Krakatau Spews Ash 14.6km High

Date:

Mount Semeru on Indonesia’s Java island erupted on Sunday as the country continued to grapple with ongoing volcanic activity at Anak Krakatau, which has reportedly sent ash as high as 14.6 kilometres above sea level.

According to Indonesia’s Geological Agency under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mount Semeru erupted at 7.51am local time, or 00:51 GMT.

The eruption produced an ash-laden cloud that rose about one kilometre above the volcano’s summit, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported.

The event was recorded by a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimetres and lasted for 102 seconds, the agency said.

Earlier that day, Mount Ili Lewotolok also erupted, sending an ash cloud approximately 400 metres above its summit.

Meanwhile, Anak Krakatau has remained active since the night of September 4, with ongoing eruptions accompanied by rumbling sounds, tremors and lava bursts.

Satellite data showed volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau rising to about 14.6 kilometres above sea level.

Following the heightened volcanic activity, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday instructed the government, military, police, rescue teams and other relevant agencies to continue monitoring the situation and maintain readiness for any further developments.
