A Russian tourist was seriously injured after a homemade bungee jump went disastrously wrong when the tree anchoring the rope collapsed and struck him in the head.
The incident, captured on video, shows the man jumping from a birch tree above a flooded quarry using a rope tied to the tree.
After releasing the rope, he plunged into the water below and resurfaced, apparently unaware that the tree supporting the makeshift bungee setup had begun to fall.
Moments later, the tree toppled into the quarry and struck the man on the head as bystanders screamed in shock.
Witnesses immediately rushed into the water to rescue him before emergency services arrived.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to hospital.
Despite suffering multiple injuries, the tourist reportedly remained conscious throughout the ordeal.
He is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit and remains in serious condition.
According to local media in Nizhny Novgorod, the man misjudged his landing and hit the water awkwardly before becoming trapped beneath the falling tree.
The report added that the tree collapsed from the riverbank where the rope had been secured, pinning the victim in the water.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who claim the flooded quarry is frequently used for improvised bungee jumping despite lacking proper safety measures or supervision.
The accident comes amid growing scrutiny of unsafe adventure activities.
In a separate incident in Brazil, a woman died after bungee jump staff allegedly failed to attach her safety rope before she leapt from a platform more than 130 feet high.
The aspiring teacher was pronounced dead at the scene, while several workers reportedly fled before later being arrested by police.
