Police have arrested 12 officers of various ranks for allegedly extorting RM2 million from a Chinese national.
According to sources, the victim was only released after paying USD140,000, which is equivalent to about RM560,000.
The victim later lodged a report at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD), leading to the arrest of the police personnel suspected to be involved in the case.
“Following the report, 12 police officers and personnel were detained, including those holding the ranks of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and other ranks,” a source said.
The group is believed to have demanded RM2 million from the victim in an alleged extortion attempt.
However, the victim reportedly managed to pay only RM560,000 before deciding to seek police assistance and file a report.
Authorities also recovered part of the money believed to be linked to the case during the investigation.
Meanwhile, Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam confirmed that the suspects had been detained.
Investigations into the alleged extortion case are ongoing.
