A Kolej Komuniti Bukit Beruang student died after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into an ambulance at the Ayer Merbau traffic light junction here this morning.
The victim, Muhammad Amirul Asyraaf Md Azizan, 18, was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the Red Zone of Jasin Hospital at around 10.30am.
Jasin district police chief Superintendent Lee Robert said the teenager was travelling from Jasin towards Bemban, while the ambulance was heading from Ayer Merbau towards Jasin Hospital.
“Initial investigations found that the accident is believed to have occurred after the ambulance driver entered the junction while the traffic light was red.
“The victim’s motorcycle, which was approaching from the right, then crashed into the driver’s side of the ambulance,” he said when contacted by reporters today.
Lee said the collision left the student with serious injuries to his head, arms and legs. He was rushed to Jasin Hospital but was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
“A post-mortem will be conducted at the Forensic Unit of Jasin Hospital to determine the cause of death.
“The victim was also the son of a public officer attached to the Jasin District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division,” he said.
The ambulance driver, Mohd Noorikhmal Baharuddin, 41, suffered a fractured arm in the crash.
Two other occupants of the ambulance – medical assistant Daim Abdullah, 24, and K. Seras @ Jeyaraj, 81 – also sustained injuries.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
