A 19-year-old trainee from a skills training centre in Kuala Terengganu tragically drowned while swimming with friends at Air Terjun Chemerong in Hulu Dungun on Wednesday.
The incident is believed to have occurred at about 1.30pm, prompting an emergency call to authorities at 1.49pm.
According to Bandar Al Muktaffi Billah Shah (AMBS) Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Fire Officer II Osman Abdullah, the victim, identified as Wan Shafuan Irfan Wan Harun, suddenly began struggling in the water while bathing with five friends.
His companions immediately attempted to rescue him, but their efforts were unsuccessful. They then sought assistance from other visitors in the area, who later helped locate the victim’s body.
When six firefighters arrived at the scene, members of the public had already recovered the victim from the water. Firefighters subsequently brought the body to shore before contacting medical personnel to confirm the death.
The tragedy has shocked visitors at the popular recreational destination, which is well-known among locals and tourists seeking outdoor activities and natural attractions.
Meanwhile, Acting Dungun District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Jumaidy Bah Chong Weh confirmed that a report regarding the incident had been received.
The victim’s body was later transported to the Forensic Unit of Dungun Hospital for further procedures and investigation.
