5 Of 10 Illegal Immigrants Recaptured After Tanah Merah Depot Escape

Date:

Police have recaptured five of the 10 undocumented migrants who escaped from the Tanah Merah Immigration Detention Depot here on Sunday.

Tanah Merah district police chief Superintendent Mohd Haki Hasbullah said the five migrants were arrested at separate locations in the district over three days, from Monday until yesterday.

Those recaptured comprised three Thai nationals and one each from Indonesia and Myanmar.

Mohd Haki said one of the 10 escapees was caught on the day of the incident, while two others were apprehended the following day. The remaining two were detained yesterday at separate locations in the district.

“Five migrants are still at large, comprising three Thai nationals, as well as one Bangladeshi man and one Myanmar national, specifically from the Rohingya ethnic group,” he said when contacted today.

All 10 migrants had escaped from the Tanah Merah Immigration Detention Depot on Sunday before police launched efforts to locate them.

Authorities are continuing the search for the five remaining escapees, with police urging members of the public to provide information that could assist in locating them.

The operation remains ongoing as authorities work to ensure all detainees who escaped from the facility are accounted for and returned to custody.
