Police have recorded statements from the driver and owner of a Perodua Myvi as part of investigations into a hit-and-run incident involving a child cyclist in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said authorities were alerted after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
Preliminary investigations found that the crash occurred at about 7.26am on Tuesday along Jalan Wirawati 5, involving a Perodua Myvi driven by a man and a bicycle ridden by a boy whose identity has yet to be established.
The accident is believed to have happened when the car was turning right out of a junction before striking the rear of the bicycle, causing the child to fall onto the road.
According to police, the driver allegedly left the scene without stopping following the collision.
Further investigations by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department led to the identification of the driver, who has since been called in to assist with the probe.
Checks revealed that the man was driving a vehicle owned by his younger brother and is a holder of an Persons with Disabilities (OKU) card under the mental disability category. Police also confirmed that he possesses a valid driving licence.
The driver and vehicle owner have presented themselves at a police station and are currently having their statements recorded.
Authorities said the extent of injuries suffered by the child cyclist has yet to be determined.
Police are urging the victim’s family to lodge a report and are appealing for witnesses, including anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, to come forward to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
