Raising awareness and knowledge on crime prevention is a key line of defence in protecting society, particularly women, from becoming victims of violence.
Ikatan Komuniti Selamat chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said most criminal activities can be prevented if public awareness is strengthened, alongside vigilance and precautionary measures in daily life.
He stressed that continuous efforts to educate the public on safety practices can help reduce the risk of falling victim to crime, including the ability to identify suspicious situations and safeguard personal information.
Lee said members of the public must also be more willing to report any form of harassment or threats, while fostering a culture of mutual care within the community, especially to prevent women from living in fear.
He also highlighted recent serious crimes involving female victims as a reminder that such threats remain prevalent and require urgent attention from all parties.
Offences such as snatch theft, robbery, sexual harassment in public spaces, workplaces and public transport, as well as online harassment, are among the common risks faced by women.
He added that other threats include domestic violence, online scams such as love scams, identity theft, digital sexual exploitation, and blackmail involving private images or videos.
Lee also emphasised the importance of public safety infrastructure such as proper street lighting, adequate CCTV coverage, effective police patrols, and strict law enforcement measures.
He said women’s safety is a shared responsibility involving all stakeholders, including men, employers, educational institutions, authorities and the wider community.
At the same time, he called for continued empowerment of women through education, awareness, and the courage to speak up, in order to build a safer, more respectful and caring society.
