A homeowner was jolted awake by a loud, thunder-like sound early this morning, only to discover that a partially constructed fence wall had collapsed onto three cars parked outside his house.
The incident occurred at about 3am following heavy rain, with concrete blocks from the collapsed wall falling onto the vehicles and spilling onto the road.
Homeowner V. Tiagarajan, 43, said he was asleep when he heard the loud noise before rushing outside to investigate.
“I rushed out of the house to see what had happened. It turned out that the side section of my fence wall, which was still under construction, had completely collapsed and fallen onto three cars belonging to my neighbours parked outside.
“Concrete blocks were scattered on the cars and the road. The vehicles damaged were a Toyota Vios, Perodua Viva and Proton Persona,” he said when met today.
Tiagarajan said construction of the boundary wall began about a month ago and was expected to be completed within another two weeks.
He said he had informed the contractor, who subsequently lodged a police report and told him the wall would be rebuilt.
Although Tiagarajan did not suffer any property losses, he said he remained concerned about the damage to his neighbours’ vehicles.
“Thankfully, no one was injured or killed, although the extent of the collapse was quite frightening,” he said.
Tiagarajan said he did not blame the contractor, believing ground movement caused by the rainy season may have contributed to the incident.
Meanwhile, vehicle owner May Lim, 58, said she was awakened by her child’s car alarm after the wall collapsed.
“My child tried to switch it off, but to no avail. When we looked outside, we saw that the wall had collapsed onto my child’s Toyota Vios and the Perodua Viva, which were parked outside the house,” she said.
May said she accepted what had happened as her neighbour was prepared to take responsibility for the damage.
“Usually, the car is parked in our parking area. But this time, it was parked outside, and we never expected this to happen,” she said.
