Couple Arrested in China for Staging Car Accident After Girlfriend’s Chest Injury to Claim Insurance

Date:

A playful stunt between a couple in China took a dangerous turn and led to a criminal investigation after a man accidentally fractured his girlfriend’s chest bone.

Instead of seeking immediate medical treatment, the couple hatched a plan to stage a car accident and claim a large insurance payout.

According to Hongxing News, the incident occurred in June 2024 in Sichuan when Wang jumped onto his girlfriend Lan’s back and asked her to carry him. The sudden pressure caused a fracture in Lan’s chest. Fearing the high cost of treatment, the couple delayed going to the hospital.

About an hour later, Wang drove Lan to a remote intersection and positioned her against the rear of his car to make it appear as if she had been hit in an accident. Lan was admitted to the hospital, and Wang convinced the insurer to advance them tens of thousands of yuan for her treatment, citing financial difficulties.

After her discharge, Lan filed a claim for over 200,000 yuan (RM117,000), concealing the true cause of her injury.

The insurance company became suspicious due to several red flags, including the couple’s relationship and a lack of collision marks on the vehicle. Photographs also showed Lan resting on a pillow in an unnatural position, leading authorities to conclude the accident had been staged.

Wang and Lan were subsequently arrested on suspicion of insurance fraud. They now face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 200,000 yuan (RM117,000).

The incident has gone viral on Chinese social media, with many users expressing disbelief at the couple’s reckless scheme.
