The five-year mystery surrounding the disappearance of two sisters has finally been unravelled after human remains were discovered at an abandoned house in Banyuasin, South Sumatra, Indonesia.
The victims, identified as RN, 18, and her younger sister AY, 14, had been reported missing since October 27, 2021.
Police suspect the two teenagers were sexually assaulted before being killed by two suspects using sharp weapons.
Talang Kelapa police chief Assistant Commissioner Mukhis said the sisters had left home at about 7am local time on the day they disappeared, travelling to school on a motorcycle.
After school, RN was reportedly planning to meet Rendi Saputra, 28, who was described as her boyfriend.
RN then went with her younger sister to meet the man in the Amanah Housing area in Keramat Raya, Talang Kelapa.
According to police, the sisters were believed to have been sexually assaulted before being killed with sharp weapons. Their bodies were then allegedly abandoned at the location.
For five years, the victims’ families continued searching for the sisters but failed to uncover any clues about their whereabouts.
The mystery began to unravel recently when a 56-year-old labourer discovered something suspicious while collecting gelam wood near the area.
The discovery led to the remains being found at an abandoned house in the Amanah Housing area.
Police subsequently launched an investigation and linked the discovery to the sisters’ disappearance in 2021.
The investigation also led police to suspect that two individuals were involved in the deaths.
However, the original report did not provide the identity of the second suspect, the detention status of either suspect or the results of forensic examinations confirming the identities of the remains.
