Fire Erupts on Docked Vessel in Hong Kong’s Typhoon Shelter

Date:

A fire erupted on a barge docked at a typhoon shelter in Yau Ma Tei on Tuesday, sending thick smoke over the downtown neighbourhood, authorities said.

Police received reports at 12:54pm of smoke rising from a vessel moored at the New Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area. Preliminary investigations indicated that miscellaneous items on board had caught fire.

“There is currently no evidence to suggest any criminal involvement,” the police stated.

No injuries were reported, and no evacuations were necessary. Firefighters, supported by fireboats, worked to extinguish the blaze.

Photos from the scene showed plumes of white smoke drifting toward the densely populated area, prompting the Fire Services Department to advise residents affected by the smoke or unusual odours to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed.
