A 69-year-old man is believed to have accidentally stepped on the accelerator while reversing his car, causing it to hit two other vehicles before crashing into an eatery in Taman Daya, Johor Bahru, on Tuesday afternoon.
Johor Bahru Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffie said police detected a video of the incident circulating online at around 2.20pm.
Initial investigations found that the local man had just finished breakfast at the eatery and was preparing to return home in Jalan Daya.
While attempting to reverse his Toyota Camry, the man allegedly pressed the accelerator, causing the vehicle to move backwards and hit a white Proton Saga parked behind it.
Azrul Hisham said the driver then became panicked following the collision and pressed the accelerator again, causing the Camry to reverse further and hit another white Toyota Camry parked in front of the eatery.
“The vehicle then continued moving before entering the premises of the eatery,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
The crash damaged both vehicles and the eatery.
Police believe the incident was caused by the driver’s negligence while operating the accelerator, resulting in the vehicle losing control and colliding with the other vehicles and the premises.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
