The driver believed to have caused a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two teenage girls in Teluk Intan has tested positive for benzodiazepine, police have confirmed.
Hilir Perak District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Chua Kok Lian said preliminary urine screening conducted on the 28-year-old suspect found traces of the drug. He is currently being detained to assist with investigations and is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
Police are investigating the crash under Section 44(1)(a) and Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The suspect is also being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 in connection with the drug offence.
Initial investigations revealed that the crash occurred at about 6.35pm on Sunday when the suspect allegedly lost control of his car while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The car then collided with a motorcycle, another car, and a seven-year-old boy who was standing by the roadside.
The two victims, aged 16 and 17, who were riding the motorcycle, were pronounced dead at the scene. The seven-year-old boy sustained injuries and was taken to Hospital Teluk Intan for treatment.
Police said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
