A police multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) was involved in an accident after being hit by a car allegedly driven by a man under the influence of alcohol along Lebuh AMJ-Semabok, Melaka Tengah, on Thursday morning.
Melaka Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Superintendent Muhammad Zaki Ramat said the incident occurred at about 6.45am when the police MPV was parked by the roadside while officers were conducting a vehicle inspection.
He said the police vehicle had its beacon lights and hazard lights switched on to ensure the safety of officers carrying out their duties.
“However, a car travelling from behind is believed to have crashed into the right rear side of the PDRM MPV.
“No injuries were reported, and the incident only caused damage to both vehicles,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
Muhammad Zaki said further investigations found that the driver of the car was a 28-year-old local man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
He said a breathalyser test showed the driver’s alcohol level exceeded the permitted limit, while an initial urine screening found him negative for drug abuse.
“The suspect was arrested to assist investigations and will be brought before the Ayer Keroh Magistrates’ Court for a remand application.
“The case is being investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and further investigations are ongoing,” he said.
