An elderly couple were killed after the car they were travelling in skidded into a drain along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) southbound at KM242 on Saturday evening.
Rembau district police chief Superintendent Ngiam Ooi Ming said the 75-year-old man died at the scene, while his 70-year-old wife succumbed to her injuries at Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital at around 8pm.
The accident happened at approximately 5.20pm.
Preliminary investigations found that the couple were passengers in a Proton Saga driven by a 20-year-old man, who was travelling with another female passenger, aged 21, from Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, towards Port Dickson.
Ngiam said the car was believed to have lost control after a group of motorcyclists riding in a convoy allegedly overtook it and suddenly cut into its path.
“The vehicle subsequently lost control and skidded into a drain on the left side of the highway,” he said in a statement on Saturday night.
The 21-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was taken to Rembau Hospital for treatment, while the driver escaped unharmed.
Police confirmed that both deceased victims were family members of the driver.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Ngiam said further investigations were underway to establish the exact cause of the accident and identify the group of motorcyclists believed to have been at the scene.
Members of the public who witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage have been urged to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Rembau District Police Headquarters to assist with the investigation.
