An elderly husband and wife were killed after the motorcycle they were riding allegedly failed to complete an overtaking manoeuvre before colliding with a lorry at Kampung Paya Lada, Kadok, near here today.
The victims were identified as Idris Che Ngah, 74, and his wife, Azizah Che Mbong, 62. Both died at the scene after suffering severe injuries to their bodies in the crash, which occurred at around 9.15am.
Kota Bharu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azmir Damiri said preliminary investigations found that an Inokom lorry driven by a man in his 40s was travelling from Kota Bharu towards Ketereh.
At the same time, the couple were travelling in the opposite direction on a Honda Wave motorcycle.
“When they reached the location, the motorcycle was believed to have attempted to overtake a vehicle in front but failed to return to its lane.
“This caused the motorcycle carrying the elderly couple to collide with the lorry travelling in the opposite direction,” he said when contacted today.
Mohd Azmir said both victims were pronounced dead at the scene before their bodies were taken to the Forensic Unit of Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Kubang Kerian for post-mortem examinations.
The lorry driver escaped the accident without injuries.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, as investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
