Police have clarified that a Perodua Kancil driver seen in a viral dashcam video driving erratically before a fatal crash in Semerah, Batu Pahat, was not under the influence of alcohol.
Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said initial investigations found that the 72-year-old driver was instead believed to have been suffering from a medical condition at the time of the incident. However, the exact nature of the illness has yet to be confirmed.
The crash, which occurred yesterday afternoon, involved the elderly driver’s Perodua Kancil and a Nissan Sentra driven by a woman, who sustained injuries in the collision.
A one-minute-52-second dashcam recording of the incident had earlier gone viral on social media, showing the Kancil vehicle moving erratically before it collided with another car.
In a separate account, a man believed to be the victim’s son said his father may have been experiencing hypoglycaemia, a condition linked to low blood sugar levels. He claimed the elderly man had previously suffered similar episodes at home.
The family also said they were unaware that he had left his residence in Muar at the time, adding that repeated attempts to contact him went unanswered before news of the crash emerged.
