Police Officers Among Suspects In Murder Of Journalist Roxana Guzmán

Date:

Authorities in Mexico have confirmed that human remains discovered in the eastern state of Veracruz belong to journalist Roxana Guzmán, in a case that has once again highlighted the dangers faced by media workers in the country.

Guzmán, who headed the crime news outlet Pulso Informativo del Sureste, was abducted from her home on June 2 after armed and masked individuals forced their way inside. Video footage of the incident reportedly circulated widely on social media, sparking public alarm.

According to local reports, the attackers allegedly killed Guzmán before attempting to dispose of her body using fuel-filled containers. Investigators later recovered skeletal remains from the property linked to the case.

The Veracruz state prosecutor’s office confirmed that forensic analysis had positively identified the remains as belonging to the journalist, stating that the scientific examination completed the verification process.

In connection with the killing, authorities said eight individuals have been arrested, including four municipal police officers from Ixhuatlán del Sureste, a small town located roughly 300 kilometres from Veracruz city.

Prosecutors further alleged that some of the officers provided logistical support, including resources and food, to the criminal group believed to be involved in the abduction and murder.

Press freedom organisations have once again raised concerns over safety conditions for journalists in Mexico. Rights group Article 19 reported that several media workers have been killed in connection with their work in recent years, underscoring the persistent risks faced by the press.

Since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, the organisation says multiple journalists have been killed, reinforcing Mexico’s reputation as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for media professionals.
