Elderly Man Accused Of Attacking Neighbour With Iron Rod Suffers Seizure In Court

Date:

Court proceedings involving a 62-year-old man accused of seriously injuring his elderly neighbour were briefly interrupted after the accused suffered a seizure at the Sessions Court 2 here today.

The accused, Ooi Hock Wah, was reportedly attended to by police personnel on duty, who administered medication that he had brought with him. He was later calmed down and regained his ability to speak after several minutes.

Ooi is facing a charge under Section 326 of the Penal Code for allegedly causing grievous hurt to a man using a weapon or iron object. The provision carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, as well as a fine or whipping upon conviction.

The incident allegedly occurred at about 9.30am on 23 August 2026 in front of a house along Jalan Perak here.

When the charge was read to him in the Hokkien dialect before Judge Irwan Suainbon, Ooi indicated that he understood the accusation and pleaded guilty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Jung Keong handled the case, while Ooi was not represented by a lawyer.

The prosecution did not offer bail, citing the serious condition of the alleged victim, who is currently receiving hospital treatment for fractures to both legs and an arm. The victim was also reportedly still in an unstable condition.

Lee also told the court that Ooi lived next door to the victim, raising concerns about the victim’s safety should the accused be released.

“The granting of bail and the accused’s release would pose a risk to the victim, who is still undergoing treatment. The accused has also pleaded guilty,” he said.

The court subsequently allowed the prosecution’s application for the accused to be denied bail after considering the arguments presented.

The case has been postponed to 1 October for the submission of the facts of the case for sentencing and a full medical report.

The incident was previously reported after an 80-year-old man was seriously injured when he was allegedly attacked by his neighbour with an iron rod along Jalan Perak on Sunday.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said preliminary investigations found that the victim was in front of his house at about 9.30am when the incident occurred.

The victim suffered serious injuries to his hands and legs and remains under treatment at Penang Hospital.

Police subsequently arrested the suspect and seized an iron rod believed to have been used in the attack from his home.

Investigators believe the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the two neighbours.
