An unemployed man was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here after pleading guilty to obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duties last Monday.
Magistrate Siti Zubaidah Mahat handed down the sentence against Shahrudin Saad, 45, after he admitted to the charge when it was read to him by the court interpreter.
The father of seven was accused of intentionally obstructing Corporal Mohd Fareth Abdul Hadi while the officer was carrying out his public duties.
The offence allegedly took place at about 6.10pm on 24 August along Jalan Persiaran Hamzah Alang towards Pekan Meru.
Shahrudin was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of two years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both upon conviction.
During mitigation, lawyer Nathiya Kamalanathan urged the court to impose a lighter sentence, highlighting the family’s circumstances. She told the court that five of Shahrudin’s children are still attending primary and secondary school.
After considering the submissions, the court ordered Shahrudin to pay a RM3,000 fine or face two months in jail if he fails to settle the payment.
The case serves as another reminder that obstructing public servants in the discharge of their official duties can result in criminal penalties under Malaysian law.
