A 77-year-old retired pharmacist was left shocked after discovering that a foul smell he noticed while visiting a shop in Pekan Sungai Lalang was coming from the body of his younger sister.
The elderly man had arrived at the premises at about 6pm to meet his 69-year-old sister when he noticed an unpleasant odour coming from inside the shop.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the man contacted police after detecting the strong smell at the premises.
“Police were informed about the discovery and the woman’s body was subsequently taken to the forensic unit at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for further action,” she said in a statement.
The deceased was believed to have been living alone at the shop, according to preliminary information gathered by police.
The discovery has left the family facing an unexpected loss, with the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death now being assessed by authorities.
Hanyan said the case has been classified as sudden death for now, pending the results of the post-mortem examination.
The examination is expected to assist investigators in determining the actual cause of death, while further details will depend on the findings of the forensic examination.
