A woman was killed while five others, including three children and a person with disabilities, were injured in a collision involving a van and a lorry on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) early this morning.
The Johor Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre said an emergency call about the crash at KM55.1 of the northbound highway was received at 12.13am.
Renggam Fire and Rescue Station operation commander Senior Fire Officer II Shoromi Salih said five firefighters and one fire engine were dispatched to the scene, about 51 kilometres away, arriving at 12.54am.
The crash involved a Toyota van and an Isuzu lorry, with six people travelling in the van. Five injured passengers — an adult man, a man with disabilities, a boy and two girls — were freed by members of the public before firefighters arrived.
The woman driving the van was trapped in the driver’s compartment and was pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters subsequently used specialised rescue equipment to free her body.
The deceased was handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police for further action, while the five injured victims were given medical treatment by Health Ministry personnel.
The Isuzu lorry driver escaped the incident without injuries. The circumstances surrounding the crash are expected to be investigated by the relevant authorities.
