A father and his nine-year-old son who died after becoming trapped in a house fire in Kampung Tok Jembal early Wednesday were found embracing each other upstairs, leaving behind a grieving wife and their three-month-old baby.
The victims were identified as Amirul Fahmi Wan Jusoh, 40, and his eldest son, Rehan Yusuf Amirul Fahmi, 9. Their bodies were discovered in an upstairs area of the two-storey house after firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Amirul Fahmi’s wife, Nur Izzah Ahmad, 36, who had recently given birth to their second child, said her late husband had planned for the family to move to his mother’s house after she completed her confinement period.
She said her husband had stayed at her mother’s house in Kampung Paloh on Monday night before returning to their home in Tok Jembal with Rehan on Tuesday afternoon.
Nur Izzah also revealed that her husband had given her a final reminder to take leave from work on Wednesday because their three-month-old baby, Raees Yusuf, was unwell.
“He asked me to take leave today because Raees was not well. I never expected that I would end up taking leave because of what happened to him,” she said when met at the Forensic Department of Sultan Zainal Abidin Hospital on Wednesday.
The couple, who married in 2021, had two children, Yusuf Ali, 4, and Raees Yusuf, three months. Nur Izzah said her husband had already started moving household items to his mother’s home and was planning improvements there, including installing a water heater.
She said the planned move had been postponed because she was still completing her confinement period at her mother’s house in Kampung Paloh.
Meanwhile, Rehan’s biological mother, Siti Nasuha Mohd, 32, said her only child had sent a voice message expressing his love for his family on the night before the tragedy.
Siti Nasuha, who works in Kuala Lumpur, travelled back to Terengganu alone after being informed of the incident by her mother-in-law. She arrived in Kuala Terengganu at about 8am on Wednesday.
The remains of the father and son were later taken to Jamek Tok Jembal Mosque for funeral prayers before being laid to rest at the Tok Jembal Cemetery.
The tragedy has left both families mourning the sudden loss of two lives, while relatives and loved ones gathered at the hospital to await the funeral arrangements.
