Female Tourist Wields Knife And Attacks Officers After WeChat Pay Failure

Date:

A female tourist was arrested in Hong Kong after allegedly attacking security personnel with a kitchen knife in an early morning incident at a noodle restaurant in Sheung Shui on Saturday.

CCTV footage that went viral online shows the woman repeatedly swinging the knife at police riot shields as officers attempted to control the situation.

The suspect, reportedly from Jilin Province, China, had just entered Hong Kong on January 2 using a two-way permit after traveling in Vietnam.

According to police, the incident began when the woman was unable to make a payment via WeChat Pay because her phone had run out of battery. The restaurant owner had offered assistance by allowing her to charge her phone, but the woman reportedly lost control, ran into the kitchen, and grabbed a knife and scissors.

Her aggressive actions caused staff and customers to flee in panic. She also allegedly damaged a restaurant phone used for payment, prompting the owner to call the police.

When officers arrived, the woman continued to behave aggressively and threatened them with the knife. Police subdued her using a JPX4 pepperball launcher, hitting her right arm, before she was finally restrained and taken into custody.

The woman was transported to North District Hospital conscious for treatment and is now under investigation for three separate offenses.
