Floods Hit Bintulu, 56 Evacuated to Temporary Relief Centre

Date:

A temporary relief centre (PPS) at Dewan Suarah Bintulu was activated at 12.30am today after several areas in Bintulu were inundated by floods late last night.

According to the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat, the centre is now housing 56 evacuees from 14 families, mainly from Kampung Kemunting and Roselind Suang Longhouse.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Control Centre said a team from the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Station was deployed to Kampung Kemunting around 10.30pm after receiving an emergency call regarding rising floodwaters.

“The water levels had increased, and our team evacuated 16 people using a Hicom lorry,” a spokesman said.

A second emergency call came at 12.52am from Roselind Suang Longhouse, prompting the dispatch of a 13-member rescue team. The evacuees were transported using an aluminium boat before being moved to the PPS via Hicom lorry.

The operation wrapped up at 2.45am.
