Former Tabung Haji Chairman, Treasury Chief Secretary Released After Seven-Day MACC Remand

Date:

The former chairman of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) and a former Treasury secretary-general have been released from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remand after seven days of questioning over issues linked to the pilgrimage fund.

Sources said both individuals were released this morning after being remanded from August 27, with investigators having completed the process of recording their statements.

The two were previously ordered to be held for seven days to assist the MACC’s investigation following revelations contained in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report into TH.

The RCI report, uploaded on the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s official portal on July 29, recommended a forensic audit to examine how past investment decisions were made and how those decisions contributed to a significant decline in TH’s asset values.

The report, which examined TH’s management and operations between 2014 and 2020, also identified several troubled investments that it said warranted forensic examination.

Among its findings, the RCI reported the existence of suspicious transactions and alleged concealment of information.

The inquiry covered issues surrounding TH throughout the 2014 to 2020 period, taking into account findings by professional firms PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY) and Roland Berger.

The review did not include restructuring and recovery plans that were already being implemented at the time.

Although the pair have now been released, the MACC investigation into the matters highlighted in the RCI report may continue as authorities examine the findings and gather further information.
