Grab Malaysia has apologised and pledged to investigate after a driver was accused of refusing to pick up a wheelchair user, sparking outrage on social media.
The incident came to light after a woman shared a video on Threads alleging that the driver refused to take her friend because she was a person with a disability (PWD).
The footage showed the wheelchair user approaching the vehicle before the driver accelerated away, allegedly leaving her safety at risk.
In her post, the woman condemned the driver’s actions, saying the group had booked two vehicles for eight people and could have rearranged the passengers if the driver was unwilling to accommodate her friend.
She also claimed that her friend had experienced similar discrimination before, adding that discrimination against people with disabilities by e-hailing drivers was a real and ongoing issue.
The post quickly attracted widespread attention and criticism from netizens, prompting Grab Malaysia to respond publicly.
In a comment beneath the post, Grab Malaysia apologised and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of discrimination, particularly against people with disabilities.
The company said its safety team would conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action.
It also urged the woman to provide the booking reference number or registered phone number through a private message to help identify the driver and ensure the matter was handled seriously and promptly.
