Nik Nazmi Suspended From Bersama Activities For Three Months Over Khalwat Case

Date:

Bersama leader Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has been suspended from all official party activities for three months following his admission that he was involved in a khalwat case being investigated by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS).

Bersama president Syukri Razab said the decision was made after the party took note of Nik Nazmi’s admission regarding the incident, which recently came to light.

He said Bersama viewed the development seriously and believed that issues involving the party’s leadership and members must be addressed appropriately to preserve the party’s integrity, credibility and public confidence.

“The party has therefore decided to place Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad on leave from Oct 20, 2026, until Jan 19, 2027,” he said in a statement today.

Syukri said the decision was considered necessary and reasonable in light of the circumstances.

However, he stressed that the move did not diminish Nik Nazmi’s contributions and commitment to Bersama’s cause since the party was relaunched in May 2026.

Nik Nazmi, a former natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, had earlier confirmed that he was among two individuals detained by JAIS during an operation in Petaling Jaya on Oct 15.

He reportedly explained that a discussion with several friends initially took place at a studio in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, before moving to Petaling Jaya to review materials related to a project under discussion.

However, he admitted that only he and a woman were at the location when JAIS officers arrived.

Nik Nazmi also acknowledged a lapse in judgment over the incident but denied engaging in any improper conduct that could give rise to suspicion.
