A food delivery rider who was involved in a viral accident involving a school student at a zebra crossing has claimed trial at the Magistrates’ Court here to a charge of careless driving.
Muhammad Haziq Izzuddin Ruslan, 25, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman on Thursday.
The single man was accused of riding a Yamaha motorcycle without exercising proper care and attention towards other road users, resulting in a collision with a pedestrian.
The incident allegedly occurred at around 12.08pm on September 28 along Persiaran Saujana 4 in the Sungai Buloh district.
He was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 and imprisonment of up to 12 months upon conviction.
During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Alia Anisa Khairus Masnan proposed bail of RM5,000 with one surety.
However, defence lawyer Muhamad Saifullah Muhamad Azmi appealed for the minimum bail, saying his client had no fixed income and was supporting his unemployed parents.
“He does not have a fixed income, so a higher amount would make it difficult for his family to raise the bail money.
“After the incident, he did not flee and remained at the roadside with the victim,” the lawyer said.
The court subsequently granted Haziq bail of RM2,000 with one surety and ordered him to report to a police station once a month.
The court fixed November 12 for mention.
The case gained attention after a video circulated online on Monday showing a student being hit by a motorcycle while crossing the road at the zebra crossing.
The impact sent the student rolling onto the road, while the rider also fell and the motorcycle was dragged along the road.
