A 24-year-old motorcyclist has claimed trial at the Magistrates’ Court here after being charged with riding carelessly and causing a collision involving two schoolgirls in Permatang Pauh last week.
Mohamad Amin Abdul Hamid, a public service assistant who had only been in permanent employment for four months, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Sharifah Razali today.
According to the charge, Mohamad Amin was riding a Honda RS-X motorcycle in a careless and inconsiderate manner, resulting in an accident involving two pedestrians.
The incident allegedly took place at around 7.20am on September 23 along Jalan Permatang Pauh in the Seberang Perai Tengah district.
He was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun proposed bail of RM10,000 with one surety. However, defence lawyer K. Puvirajan from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) appealed for a lower amount, saying his client earns RM1,500 a month and supports both his parents.
The court subsequently granted bail of RM7,000 with one surety and fixed November 18 for mention.
The case relates to an incident reported on September 23, when police were searching for a motorcyclist believed to have hit two girls, aged eight and nine, near a school along Jalan Permatang Pauh.
Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah had said the motorcyclist later came forward at a police station to assist investigations after learning that footage of the incident had gone viral on social media.
