Johor Driver Falls Asleep At Traffic Lights, Wakes Up After Police Knock

Date:

An Audi driver is believed to have fallen asleep at a traffic light junction in Tanjung Puteri, Johor Bahru, before waking up after a police officer knocked on his car window.

Johor Bahru Selatan deputy police chief Superintendent Ng Swie Chait said police became aware of a video of the incident that went viral on Facebook at about 10.06pm on Friday.

He said preliminary investigations found that the incident occurred at about 6.50am, when the man, who works as a restaurant waiter at a shopping centre, was on his way home to Taman Mount Austin.

“The driver is believed to have fallen asleep while inside his vehicle at the Tanjung Puteri traffic light junction.

“A police officer who was nearby then approached the vehicle and knocked on the window to get the driver’s attention,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

The officer’s actions startled the driver awake, after which he began driving slowly forward.

However, police later found that the Audi had proceeded against the flow of traffic towards Jalan Jim Quee.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver returned a negative result for alcohol.

“The case is being investigated under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for disregarding traffic signals,” Ng said.

Police have advised motorists to ensure they are fit and alert before getting behind the wheel.

“They are also reminded to comply with road rules and regulations to prevent incidents that could endanger themselves and other road users,” he said.
