A married woman was among four individuals detained after they were allegedly found in close proximity in a hotel room in Johor on Friday morning.
The group, which included a minor, was detained during an inspection by officers from the Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAINJ) at about 9am.
According to JAINJ, the four were found together in a hotel room and were neither married to each other nor related by mahram ties.
“One of the women admitted that she was still married but said she was facing problems in her marriage.
“However, this did not change her status as a wife at the time of the inspection,” JAINJ said in a statement.
The woman reportedly told enforcement officers that she was at the hotel with another woman, while the two men allegedly arrived later to bring breakfast and chat with them.
“They claimed they were only friends and had not engaged in any immoral acts.
“However, they were still detained for further action as they were together in a hotel room without any mahram relationship,” the department said.
Further checks reportedly found women’s bags and clothing inside the wardrobe, while the bed in the room was found to be untidy.
All four were detained under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment and are expected to be charged at the Syariah Court, JAINJ said.
