A housing committee chairman at a statutory body in Johor has been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over allegations of soliciting money from about 400 applicants for government housing plots, involving an estimated RM1.6 million.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was detained at about 7.30pm on Monday after he turned up at the Johor MACC office to have his statement recorded.
According to a source, the suspect allegedly demanded around RM4,000 from each applicant in connection with applications for government housing lots.
Initial investigations found that the alleged activities took place between 2016 and 2025.
The money collected was also allegedly misappropriated for personal use through withdrawals from the committee’s bank account using fake invoices.
Johor MACC director Datuk Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim said the case was being investigated under Sections 16(a)(A), 18 and 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
“The suspect will be released on MACC bail after his statement has been recorded,” he said.
