Kuching Records Highest Drug Cases In Sarawak, Says State Minister

Date:

Kuching has been identified as Sarawak’s main drug hotspot after recording the highest number of drug-related offences in the state so far this year.

State Minister for Women, Community Wellbeing and Family Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the district has officially been categorised as a drug “red zone” following a sharp rise in cases.

She revealed that 2,080 drug-related offences were recorded in Kuching between January and May, making it the highest in the state during the period.

Fatimah said the classification reflects growing concern over drug abuse trends in urban centres, particularly in major towns across Sarawak.

Other areas also reporting significant numbers include Miri, Sibu and Bintulu, which continue to show elevated drug-related activity.

She added that the increase in arrests was partly driven by intensified enforcement operations targeting both traffickers and users.

Concerns over the worsening drug situation in Sarawak have been previously raised, with calls for stronger intervention and rehabilitation capacity.

Authorities have also highlighted the urgent need for more rehabilitation centres, noting that the state currently relies heavily on a single facility in Puncak Borneo to serve the entire population.
