A house owner in Jepara, Central Java, Indonesia, reportedly lost up to 15 million rupiah (RM3,420) after a newly hired domestic helper allegedly stole cash on her first day at work.

The incident took place at about 3.25pm local time in Mayong Kidul Village recently, according to Indonesian news portal Lambe Turah.

CCTV footage reportedly captured the helper cleaning her employer’s bedroom before opening a drawer and taking several banknotes. The cash allegedly included 50,000 rupiah (RM11) and 100,000 rupiah (RM23) notes.

Jepara Police Criminal Investigation Unit chief Andika Oktavian Saputra said the victim, identified as MAF, 29, had hired the suspect through Facebook.

According to Andika, the woman began working at the victim’s home on the same day the alleged theft occurred, making the incident particularly concerning for the homeowner.

“She started working at the victim’s house on the day of the incident. The victim lost between 10 million rupiah (RM2,280) and 15 million rupiah (RM3,420),” he said.

The alleged theft was subsequently brought to the attention of police, with the CCTV recording expected to assist investigators in establishing what happened and tracing the suspect.

The case has also highlighted the importance of verifying the background and references of domestic helpers, particularly when recruitment is carried out through social media platforms.
