Man Arrested After Student Attacked At Setapak Bus Stop

Date:

Police have arrested a foreign national suspected of attacking a university student with a metal rod at a bus stop in Setapak yesterday.

Wangsa Maju District Police Chief ACP Annas Sulaiman said the 39-year-old suspect was detained by officers from the Criminal Investigation Division of Wangsa Maju District Police Headquarters (IPD) at the roadside in Taman Setapak at 10.54am today.

He said the arrest was made following a police report lodged at about 11.30am yesterday regarding the alleged assault involving a 20-year-old male student from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

“The incident took place when the victim was waiting for a bus along Jalan Danau Saujana near Aeon Mall Danau Kota before he was attacked,” he said in a statement.

Police also seized an iron car jack handle believed to have been used in the incident during the arrest.

Annas said police will apply for a remand order against the suspect tomorrow to assist investigations into the case.

The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction.

The suspect is also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which carries a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, as well as a maximum of six strokes of the cane.
