A man has died after being buried in a landslide that struck the rear of a house in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, Penang, on Sunday morning.

The victim was pronounced dead at 9.10am by Health Ministry personnel who arrived at the scene.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department Operations Division assistant director John Sagun Francis said three people were involved in the incident, with one reported trapped beneath the collapsed earth.

Firefighters were carrying out search and rescue operations to retrieve the victim, he said in a statement on Sunday.

The department received an emergency call at 8.36am, and a team from the Paya Terubong Fire and Rescue Station arrived two minutes later.

The operation was led by a commander and involved seven firefighters, a Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit.

Preliminary information indicated that the landslide had affected the rear of a Class A house.

John said firefighters launched the search and rescue operation after receiving initial reports that one occupant had managed to escape, while another was believed to be trapped.

Police were also at the scene to assist with the operation.

Rescue efforts were ongoing, with further updates to be provided as more information became available.
