A man who targeted mosque and surau donation boxes in a series of thefts over the past five years has been sentenced to a total of 69 months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here.
Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin handed down the sentence to Mu’ammar Raid Abdul Malik, 37, after he pleaded guilty to nine charges brought against him.
Four of the charges, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, involved stealing cash and donation box money from several places of worship, including RM3,000 belonging to Madrasah Al Jariah Kampungku Sayang at about 2.30am on Nov 25, 2025.
The accused also admitted to stealing money from donation boxes at Surau Kampung Pengkalan Lanjut, Tanjung Kling at about 4.45am on March 30, 2026, and Surau Al Karim, Kampung Gedong Lalang at about 6.38pm on March 31.
He was also charged with attempting to steal money from the donation box at Masjid As-Syakirin, Pasir Puteh, Bachang at about 11.10pm on Aug 16, 2021. The charge was read together with Section 511 of the Penal Code for attempted offences.
Mu’ammar further pleaded guilty to two charges under Section 447 of the Penal Code for criminal trespass after entering Masjid As-Syakirin, Pasir Puteh and Surau Al Mustaqim, Batu Berendam without permission.
For another charge, he admitted to breaking into Surau An-Naim in Klebang Besar with the intention of committing theft at about 4.30am on Nov 28, 2025, under Section 457 of the Penal Code.
The accused also faced two charges under Regulation 25(1)(n) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 for failing to produce his identity card when requested by police on Aug 16, 2021 and July 18, 2026.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Alia Safri led the prosecution, while Mu’ammar was not represented by a lawyer.
The court later ordered the accused to serve a total prison term of 69 months, effective from the date of his arrest on July 18.
