Man Jailed And Fined RM5,000 For Offensive TikTok Post Against Yang di-Pertuan Agong

Date:

A man who posted offensive and insulting content against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, has been sentenced to three months’ jail and fined RM5,000 by the Bandar Baru Bangi Sessions Court.

The accused, Mohd Hafiz Haron, 42, pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Firdaus Md Isa on Tuesday. The court also ordered that he be jailed immediately and face an additional four months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.

The offence involved a TikTok post uploaded at about 7.30am on 11 September 2025, which contained allegedly obscene and offensive remarks intended to hurt the feelings of others, including the monarch.

The content was later seen by a complainant at a residence in Taman Pelangi Semenyih 2 the same day at around 10pm, prompting a police report to be lodged by the complainant and three other individuals.

The accused was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both. The law also allows additional fines for each day the offence continues after conviction.

Court documents showed that the accused was aware the content uploaded from his mobile phone was offensive and insulting towards the King.

During proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Atiqah Mohamad Alias urged the court to impose a sentence that would serve as a strong deterrent.

The unrepresented accused pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he was a village worker supporting his children and an ailing mother.

He was previously arrested on 13 September 2025 in connection with the case. Police records also showed that he had prior criminal offences, including drug-related and other cases.
