Man Ordered To Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation After Allegedly Attacking Grandmother With Hammer

Date:

A 25-year-old man has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after appearing before the Sessions Court on a charge of causing grievous injury to his grandmother with a metal hammer.

Sessions Court Judge Mohd Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli directed Muhammad Nor Iman Abdullah to undergo a mental health assessment at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak before further court proceedings.

No plea was recorded after the accused appeared confused while standing in the dock during the hearing. Court proceedings could not continue as he was unable to respond to the charge read against him.

Muhammad Nor Iman was also seen crying after the hearing while being escorted out of the courtroom. Police officers accompanying him had to calm him before taking him away.

According to the charge, the accused allegedly struck his 78-year-old grandmother, Gayah Omar, with a metal hammer, causing her to suffer serious injuries.

The alleged offence took place at a house in Kampung Baru Kuala Abang, Dungun, at about 6.30pm on June 19. He was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon.

The case follows an earlier report that the suspect had been arrested after allegedly attacking the elderly woman with a hammer, leaving her with severe head injuries.

The court will proceed with the case after receiving the results of the psychiatric examination to determine the accused’s fitness to stand trial.
