DNA testing has confirmed the identities of two university students who were killed in a fiery crash on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE), with the results matching samples provided by their parents.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said DNA samples from the victims were sent to the Petaling Jaya Chemistry Department at 8am on Sunday.
The results were completed later that day at around 4.30pm, confirming that both victims’ DNA matched that of their respective parents.
“Following the confirmation, the bodies of both victims were released to their families at approximately 6.30pm yesterday,” he said in a statement on Monday.
The fatal accident occurred at about 5.10am on Saturday when a BMW 328i Sport is believed to have lost control while travelling at high speed before crashing and bursting into flames along the DUKE Highway.
The driver, 22, and his 21-year-old front-seat passenger, both Malaysian men, became trapped inside the burning vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene.
A 20-year-old Singaporean man, who was travelling as a rear-seat passenger, managed to escape from the vehicle before the fire spread. He sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Police are continuing investigations into the crash, with preliminary findings indicating that excessive speed may have caused the driver to lose control before the vehicle veered off the road and caught fire.
