A 65-year-old man suffered serious injuries after allegedly being slashed three times by his younger brother during a heated argument at a durian orchard property in Paya Terubong, Air Itam.
The violent incident unfolded at around 3.30pm on Sunday when the victim visited his orchard to inspect the property and discovered that several items inside a house on the land had been damaged.
Northeast District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the victim suspected the damage had been caused by his 62-year-old brother and confronted him over the matter.
According to investigators, the confrontation quickly escalated into a verbal argument between the siblings before the suspect allegedly turned violent.
“The suspect is believed to have armed himself with a machete and slashed the victim three times before fleeing the scene,” Abdul Rozak said in a statement.
The attack left the victim with severe injuries, and he was rushed to Hospital Pulau Pinang for emergency treatment.
Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 3.50pm and immediately launched an operation to track down the suspect.
With assistance from the Criminal Investigation Department’s K-9 Detection Unit from the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters, officers managed to locate and arrest the suspect just three hours later.
“The suspect was detained at about 6.30pm on the same day behind a house located within the orchard area where the incident occurred,” Abdul Rozak said.
The 62-year-old suspect has been remanded for seven days, from June 22 to June 28, to assist investigators.
Police have classified the case under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, as well as Section 18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994.
The shocking family dispute has highlighted how personal disagreements can rapidly escalate into serious violence, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the attack.
Investigations are ongoing.
