A 29-year-old car wash worker has been remanded for five days after allegedly ramming a traffic policeman while trying to flee a roadblock in Ipoh on Thursday.
The man was ordered to remain in custody until Sept 30 by Magistrate Lau Eric to allow police to conduct further investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The traffic policeman, Lance Corporal Muhammad Badrul Izwany Pauzi, 29, suffered serious injuries and is being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh after undergoing surgery.
Police previously reported that the officer suffered fractures to his left arm and right leg after being hit by a car driven by the suspect as he attempted to escape the roadblock.
Ipoh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Najib Hamzah said the incident occurred at about 9.45am at a traffic light near the Perak State Secretariat Building (SUK) along Jalan Silibin.
He said the suspect made a U-turn from the left lane before crashing into one of the traffic officers who was pursuing him.
The suspect then fled towards Gunung Lang and allegedly drove against traffic in the area before losing control near the Taman Wing Onn traffic lights, where he was arrested by police.
An initial urine screening also found the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine.
