A 21-year-old man who lost his left hand in a road accident two years ago has been arrested for riding a motorcycle without a licence during a traffic crackdown in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Harian Metro, the man was detained when Kuala Lumpur traffic police conducted an operation targeting road hooligans along Jalan Ampang between 3am and 7am on Sunday.
The man reportedly told police that riding motorcycles was his hobby and showed no regret despite his disability. He has no permanent job and earns a living by repairing motorcycles for friends.
Two of his friends were also questioned during the operation, while their motorcycles were seized for illegal modifications.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri said police inspected 1,635 motorcycles, seized 111 and arrested the 21-year-old man. Investigations are being conducted under Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The operation involved 12 officers and 86 traffic police personnel working alongside Road Transport Department and National Anti-Drug Agency officers. Police issued 946 summonses, while the Road Transport Department issued 387 notices.
The anti-drug agency also conducted urine tests on 14 people, all of whom tested negative.
Mohd Zamzuri said the motorcyclists inspected were aged between 15 and 25. Although most were adults, some were still riding without valid licences.
He urged parents to monitor their children more closely to prevent unlicensed riding and ensure they obey traffic laws.
