A roller coaster at Sunway Lagoon theme park in Subang Jaya is believed to have stopped suddenly after failing to continue moving during a ride last Saturday.
The Selangor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) said preliminary investigations found that the ride was operating normally with 22 passengers on board before it stopped approximately 200 metres from the launch area.
The department said the incident triggered the ride’s emergency braking system automatically, causing the roller coaster to come to an abrupt halt.
“Following the incident, 10 passengers were sent to nearby hospitals for treatment for injuries sustained from the impact,” DOSH said in a statement.
Following the incident, DOSH issued a prohibition order at the location to allow further investigations to be carried out. Technical inspections will also be conducted by the DOSH Putrajaya Forensic Engineering Division to establish the actual cause of the incident.
Authorities are also recording statements from the employer and witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation.
The probe is being conducted under Section 18(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.
The incident took place on Saturday night, with 10 riders reported to have suffered minor injuries.
On Tuesday, Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah confirmed the roller coaster accident at Sunway Lagoon.
Cheah said the incident could have been linked to metal fatigue, while police had ruled out foul play.
He also revealed that the ride had been temporarily shut down for comprehensive inspection and maintenance work around two to three weeks before the incident.
The ride remains closed as authorities and technical teams work to determine what caused the sudden stoppage and ensure the attraction meets the required safety standards.
