The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning following forecasts of heavy rain affecting several areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah until 8pm today.
In a statement, MetMalaysia said that in Peninsular Malaysia, the affected areas include Langkawi in Kedah, as well as several districts in Kelantan such as Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang and Pasir Puteh.
Similar weather conditions are also expected in Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu, as well as Jerantut, Bentong, Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang.
Heavy rain is also forecast for Rembau in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and several districts in Johor including Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru.
In Sarawak, bad weather is expected in Sarikei (Meradong), Mukah (Tanjung Manis, Daro and Matu), Kapit (Belaga), Miri (Telang Usan and Marudi), and Limbang.
In Sabah, the warning covers inland areas such as Sipitang, Beaufort and Tambunan, as well as parts of the west coast.
MetMalaysia said a thunderstorm warning is issued when signs indicate heavy rain exceeding 20 millimetres per hour is expected to occur or has already begun and may last for more than an hour.
The department added that the warning is a short-term advisory, valid for no more than six hours from the time of issuance.
